On May 7, 1967, a dream became reality for 23 young men as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia became the first fraternity on the campus of Appalachian State University. From the beginning , the chapter was a roaring success. The Rho Tau Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha was founded upon the principles of music, community, and brotherhood.

The earliest efforts of the new chapter could be seen all throughout the town of Boone in various concerts and performances held by the brothers. The chapter was wildly popular and brought a new life to the musical world of the community. After only two years in existence, Rho Tau won the highly coveted Province Merit Award, an achievement the chapter would repeat for the next 15 years consecutively.

Some of the early activities of the Rho Tau Chapter included the establishment of annual projects like the Appalachian Marching Band Festival, Mills Music Mission, the American Music Revue, Jazz on the Rocks, a New Music Premier, and the Contemporary Music Festival; many of which have carried on and are still an important part of the Hayes School of Music today.

Today the Rho Tau Chapter is a staple of the musical world at Appalachian State University. Phi Mu Alpha has continued to push the boundaries of achievement by furthering both themselves as a brotherhood and the projects they host for the community; still holding true to the founding ideals of music, community, and brotherhood.

The history of the Rho Tau Chapter is merely an extension and continuation of the rich history of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity as a whole, an organization steeped in tradition and ideals. This chapter continues to strive to exemplify the highest standards of music in America. Rho Tau is still writing history of which we can all be proud.

"This it is to be a man of the highest type: to be and not seem; to do and not simply to talk; to have the right ideal, the true motive and patiently to transform conduct in accordance with it."
